We often hear the cliché, “the fog of war”—a simplified expression used to describe the chaos and confusion so often found in a combat zone. It’s something all combat Veterans understand. Whether you’re running toward a hardened shelter during a mortar attack or gripping the wheel as your truck races through an area known for ambushes, combat is not a place where troops often stop to document the details. Those details may be forever burned into our minds, but we often don’t come away with hard copy proof of what occurred.
Unfortunately, for years now, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has required Veterans...

In recent days, some in Massachusetts have examined the impact of the state’s health reform law on small businesses, such as this article from the Boston Globe, with some comparing the Massachusetts law to the Affordable Care Act. While both laws share the goal of increasing health insurance coverage, the Affordable Care Act includes a number of features that aren’t found in the Massachusetts law that will do even more to improve our nation’s existing health care system, lower costs and provide significant benefits for small businesses.
As Administrat...

As the Washington Post and New York Times report, the United States has fallen from first to 12th in terms of 25 to 34-year-olds with postsecondary degrees. The finding comes from a report conducted by the College Board and confirms what we’ve known for too long: that United States’ graduation rate is lagging behind our global competitors.
We know that economic security and educational progress go hand in hand. That’s one of the reasons why

Edward Fiske, author of The Fiske Guide to Colleges, has just come out with a new list. His list, "Ten Business Schools that Should Be On Your Radar," highlights ten top undergraduate business school programs. Unlike other rankings that look at dropout rates, starting salaries, and other more scientific findings, Fiske's list is more subjective, based on "peaks of excellence of various types." "It's an art," he continues, "not a science," which is why you'll see that many of Businessweek's top undergraduate business programs don't make it to Fiske's list.
Fiske's picks will be published in the 2011 edition of The Fiske Guide to College. In the me...

This is the time of year when you face the facts: Is my GMAT score high enough to get me into my schools of choice or should I retake the GMAT? As an Accepted.com consultant, I would advise you to take the GMAT to achieve your highest possible score, but I also warn you that my advice has a corollary: the law of diminishing returns applies to the GMAT.
This classic economic theory implies that if you continue to put forth effort into the GMAT, you will reach a point where the effort you put into the test will have negative consequences (diminished returns). You may in fact, continue to raise your score, but there is a point at which the number of times yo...

Pregnant Women Are Liabilities to Mortgage Lenders
Keeping unemployment benefits flowing for millions of workers whose jobs were eaten by the recession should have been a slam dunk in an election year.
At a time like this, when there are still far too many Americans out of a job, policy makers might consider this simple rule: when a program is successfully and efficiently creating jobs, don’t eliminate it.
This rule should especially be observed when the assertion that it’s working is widely agreed upon by both Democrats to Republicans, by economists and business owners and governors.
But unless the Senate acts soon to preserve the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Subsidized Jobs program, this simple rule will be broken and this great program will be taken down.
